Mets Investing In Binghamton & Syracuse For Future

The New York Mets are investing in their minor league systems and their stadiums. Back on Monday, it was announced that $5.1 million dollars would be spent for NYSEG Stadium, home of the Double-A Binghamton Rumble Ponies. With the upgrades, the ownership of the team has executed its final five-year option to keep the team in Binghamton through 2026. Both parties are already in talks to make sure that Binghamton keeps Double-A baseball well beyond 2026.

What kind of upgrades will the stadium have? Some of the upgrades include new seats, turf, video boards, sound system and renovating the home clubhouse. These upgrades will have a positive impact on both the fans and the players on the Rumble Ponies.

$2.5 million dollars is being used with state funds while another $2.5 million has been added to the project by the city of Binghamton. Team ownership is adding $100k to the project. The renovations are expected to be done prior to Opening Day.

“Baseball isn’t just America’s favorite pastime – it’s a sport completely ingrained in the history of our great state,” said New York State Senate Majority Leader John J. Flanagan (R). “Today, I am proud to announce that we are continuing this tradition through a multi-million dollar investment and improvements at NYSEG Stadium, home of the Binghamton Rumble Ponies. I want to thank Senator Fred Akshar for his unwavering commitment to keeping Double-A baseball in Binghamton, where it will continue to fuel the local economy and ensure that our great pastime will be enjoyed in the Southern Tier for many generations to come.”

The renovations come a year before Binghamton hosts the 2020 Eastern League All-Star Game.

“Today is simply an incredibly great day,” said Binghamton Rumble Ponies President John Hughes, “Our fans, the City of Binghamton, State of New York, and the New York Mets have all shown so much commitment to this team and organization. That support has culminated in securing the future of this team in a facility that has been transformed over the last three years. This will be an unparalleled facility in the Southern Tier — a fantastic place for players to develop, families to have fun and people to watch great baseball. We will be rumbling strong heading into the 2020 Eastern League All-Star Game!”

Years ago when the then Syracuse Chiefs got upgrades to their field and stadium, it drastically helped the experience of going to the games. The New York Mets are also investing $25 million dollars into the Syracuse Mets and their stadium. With the investment, the Mets will be keeping Triple-A baseball in Syracuse for the next two decades.

The New York Mets are committed to keeping baseball in Binghamton and Syracuse and fans in both areas have reason to be excited for the 2019 season and for many years to come.

The Binghamton Rumble Ponies play their first home game on April 11th, 2019 against the Erie SeaWolves of the Detroit Tigers organization.

The Syracuse Mets play their home opener on April 4th against the Pawtucket Red Sox of the Boston Red Sox organization.
